ST launches dual-range 6-axis IMUs for event reconstruction

STMicroelectronics has launched two new 6-axis inertial measurement units, the consumer-oriented LSM6DSK320X and industrial-grade ISM6HGK256X, designed for applications requiring accurate reconstruction of motion events. Target uses include fitness trackers, smart tags, industrial asset monitors, robots and drones for photography or agricultural surveying, according to the company.
Both devices use what ST describes as a super-symmetric gyroscope architecture, comprising two mirrored electromechanical structures operating in counter-phase to cancel external vibration and shock effects. Combined with a fully differential signal chain, ST states this maximises detected-signal strength and resilience within a compact package.
Dual accelerometer range
Each IMU integrates one gyroscope with two separate accelerometers in a single package, enabling simultaneous measurement of low-range disturbances up to ±16 g and high-g events up to ±320 g. ST says this contrasts with single-accelerometer IMUs, which cannot measure while switching between low-range and high-range modes.
- LSM6DSK320X (consumer): operating temperature -40°C to +85°C
- ISM6HGK256X (industrial): operating temperature -40°C to +105°C, included in ST's 10-year longevity programme
- Package size: 2.5 mm x 3 mm x 0.83 mm for both variants
Both devices include ST's machine-learning core for embedded AI processing intended to reduce application energy consumption, and are supported by additional software libraries including Motion XLF and sensor-fusion tools within the ST MEMS Studio development environment.
Sustainability claims and availability
ST states the sensors meet BPA-free, Pb-free and other sustainable-materials standards as part of its ST Sustainable Technology initiative. Betaflight and Tianhe representatives are quoted by ST praising the LSM6DSK320X's vibration immunity and performance in drone flight controllers, claims attributed to those organisations rather than independently verified.
Adapter boards STEVAL-MKI257A and STEVAL-MKI258KA will be available via the eSTore and distributors by November 2026. ST lists pricing from $4.6 for the LSM6DSK320X and $5.1 for the ISM6HGK256X, for orders of 1000 pieces.
