Microchip Technology has expanded its 10BASE-T1S single pair Ethernet portfolio with two new PMD transceivers and an integrated endpoint family, targeting edge connectivity in automotive and industrial networks.

New transceivers and endpoint family

The LAN8679 transceiver uses the Open Alliance 3-Pin (OA3P) interface in an 8-pin VDFN package, which Microchip says reduces pin count for space-constrained edge nodes. The LAN8680 adds System Basis Chip (SBC) functions, including power management, wake/sleep control and watchdog supervision.

  • LAN8679: OA3P interface, 8-pin VDFN, standalone PMD transceiver
  • LAN8680: as above, plus integrated SBC power management and watchdog
  • LAN8660X/1X/2X: single-chip Remote Control Protocol (RCP) devices combining a PMD transceiver with endpoint logic, removing the need for an external PHY

Microchip states the LAN8679 and LAN8680 are designed to meet AEC-Q100 and ISO 26262 functional safety requirements, and describes the LAN8660X/1X/2X family as suited to control systems, lighting and audio nodes.

Multidrop topology and sampling status

Microchip says its 10BASE-T1S devices support multidrop bus topology, allowing eight or more nodes to share a single bus line. The company states this reduces wiring weight and system cost and can remove the need for gateways between sensors, actuators and the network.

The devices build on Microchip's existing VelocityDRIVE portfolio and are pitched at automotive zonal architecture, industrial automation, robotics and aerospace and defence applications. Microchip has confirmed the LAN8679, LAN8680 and LAN8660X/1X/2X are available in limited sampling; no production shipping date has been disclosed.
