EMD Electronics opens Wisconsin semiconductor-materials research facility

EMD Electronics has opened a 38,000 sq ft research and development facility at Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, adding laboratories for materials used in semiconductor manufacturing.
The facility opened on 2 October and forms part of a $200 million, multiyear investment in the company’s US electronics operations. That figure covers the wider investment programme, rather than the cost of this building alone.
Eight purpose-built laboratories support activities spanning discovery, development, qualification, analytical development, purification, packaging and hazard testing. The site brings synthesis, scale-up and technology transfer together, which EMD says is intended to shorten the route from materials discovery to customer qualification.
EMD Electronics is the North American electronics business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is supporting the expansion.
The company said the laboratory would use renewable energy and that it was targeting LEED Gold certification. The announcement describes certification as an objective, rather than an award already received.
