AMD agrees $8.2bn deal for spatial AI company World Labs
AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs in an all stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The proposed deal would bring the spatial AI research company led by Fei-Fei Li into AMD as the chipmaker looks more closely at the computing demands of future AI models.
World Labs develops models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive three dimensional environments from text, images and video. Its research also includes robotic learning and simulation. Those workloads can place different demands on computing systems from conventional language model training and inference.
AMD’s stated case for the acquisition is that working directly with model researchers will help it understand where those demands are heading. That could influence decisions across processors, accelerators, memory, software and complete systems. The company has not announced a specific chip or product roadmap resulting from the deal.
“Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving,” said AMD chair and chief executive Lisa Su.
The transaction follows an existing technical relationship between the two companies. AMD says World Labs’ researchers will continue their model work after completion. Li is expected to become AMD’s executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to Su.
Generating and interacting with three dimensional environments, or using them to train robots, may expose different constraints in memory movement, inference latency, simulation throughput and deployment at the edge. AMD has not yet committed to a product or architecture arising from this research.
The price makes this a substantial strategic move, but it remains an agreement to acquire. Completion is expected by the end of 2026 and is subject to regulatory approval and other conditions.
