STMicroelectronics has announced a unified STM32 microcontroller platform intended to span industrial, automotive and robotics applications, alongside a new STM32A family that extends STM32 into automotive and high-safety systems. The announcement was made at STM32 Summit 2026 in Geneva.

According to ST, the unified platform is built on Arm Cortex-M cores and shared architectural principles, allowing developers to carry software and IP between STM32 families rather than redesigning for each new application domain. ST cites the existing STM32Cube ecosystem, described by the company as the world's largest MCU software ecosystem, as the common development environment across the platform, alongside the broader Arm toolchain.

On manufacturing, ST says the platform draws on its 40nm Flash process and its 18nm FD-SOI technology with embedded phase-change memory, supplemented by TSMC embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) technologies, as the scalable process foundation for future STM32 products.

STM32A: the automotive and safety extension

The new STM32A family is ST's vehicle for bringing the STM32 architecture into automotive and safety-critical markets, with three devices named so far:

  • STM32A4, targeted at entry-level automotive local control nodes and safety systems
  • STM32A5, aimed at mid-range safety-critical applications in industrial automation, robotics and energy systems, as well as automotive use
  • STM32A9, aimed at safety-critical multi-domain control requiring real-time control, low latency, Ethernet and deterministic communication

ST states that all three STM32A devices are currently sampling to customers, with broader availability planned for 2027. This is a sampling and roadmap announcement rather than a general production release.

Arm partnership framing

Arm, described by ST as its longstanding partner, is positioned as sharing the vision of a unified microcontroller platform, with ST named as a lead partner in shaping the future of the Arm Cortex-M portfolio. Arm executive Drew Henry linked the work to bringing intelligence into machines that move, manufacture and operate in the physical world, building on more than two decades of ST-Arm collaboration on Cortex-M.

ST frames the unified platform as addressing convergence of real-time control, security, functional safety, connectivity and AI processing requirements across industrial and automotive systems, while still allowing product selection based on each application's performance, qualification and lifecycle needs.
