Microchip adds 20A GaN converter for spacecraft processor rails

Microchip has introduced a radiation-tolerant GaN point-of-load converter delivering up to 20A continuously for spacecraft processors, FPGAs and ASICs.
The synchronous buck converter accepts 4.75V to 13.2V and provides an adjustable output from 0.7V to 5V. It uses current-mode control for rapidly changing digital loads and incorporates remote sensing, output droop regulation, soft start and power-good indication.
Its electrical parameters are specified before and after irradiation to a total ionising dose of 50krad. Microchip has also characterised single-event effects to a linear energy transfer of 43MeV·cm²/mg. The full-load operating temperature range is −55°C to +100°C.
The surface-mount package weighs 25g and measures 1.51 × 1.51 × 0.45 inches. Undervoltage and overvoltage protection are included, alongside an enable input.
The POL-05-20S-T is available in production quantities. <p><a href="https://www.microchip.com/en-us/about/news-releases/products/microchip-expands-space-power-portfolio-with-new-radiation-tolerant-gan-pol-converter">Microchip product release</a>.</p>
