What IEEE 1901-2026 brings together for Nessum networks

IEEE 1901-2026 consolidates the broadband power-line specification with the authentication and additional transmission media introduced by its later amendments, giving Nessum implementations a single reference for functions previously spread across several documents.
Authentication and authorisation provisions, including the use of IEEE 802.1X, came through IEEE 1901b. IEEE 1901c then extended the flexible channel wavelet physical and media access control layers to other transmission media. The 2026 revision incorporates both amendments and corrects errors and ambiguities in the earlier text, so Panasonic's October announcement concerns the consolidation of an established technology as well as its continued deployment.
Nessum uses wavelet OFDM, with the IEEE specification allowing adaptation to different frequency bands and media. These include AC and DC power wiring, coaxial and signal cables, plus optical and radio channels; the standard also includes support for network synchronisation through IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol.
In a factory or building, much of the appeal comes from carrying data over wiring that is already installed. Avoiding a separate cable run can simplify an installation, provided the modem and coupling circuit can accommodate the attenuation and noise on the existing conductors. A cable running beside switching equipment presents different conditions from one tested in isolation, even though both can support the same communications framework.
The authentication provisions address a different part of the connection by controlling which devices are authorised to join the network. Implementing IEEE 802.1X support gives the equipment a mechanism for that decision, while configuration and provisioning determine how the mechanism is used in the finished installation.
Panasonic reports shipments of more than six million devices incorporating its Nessum semiconductor IP, including applications in commercial HVAC and smart-grid equipment. That installed base spans earlier revisions, so support for the consolidated standard will depend on the particular modem or IP core and the features implemented.
