PI calculator estimates piezoceramic behaviour before prototyping

PI has released an online calculator for estimating the mechanical and electrical behaviour of piezoceramic components before a design reaches physical prototyping.
Users select a PI ceramic material and one of six geometries: disc, ring, tube, plate, cylinder or shear plate. Dimensions and operating conditions are then used to estimate parameters including displacement, blocking force, capacitance, mass, thickness and resonance or antiresonance frequency.
The available calculations depend on the selected geometry. An actuator design can be explored by entering voltage and dimensions to estimate free displacement and blocking force, while a transducer design can be compared through its predicted resonance behaviour.
Capacitance is particularly relevant to the drive electronics because it influences the current required during rapid voltage changes. Resonance estimates can help identify whether a proposed geometry sits close to the intended operating frequency before a detailed model or sample is produced.
PI includes both established PZT materials and lead-free compositions in the material selection. The tool is intended for early comparison rather than final verification: mounting conditions, mechanical preload, electrode construction, tolerances, temperature and drive waveform can all change the behaviour of a finished component.
The calculator is available through PI's website without dedicated software. The company supplies piezoceramic materials and components as well as drive and motion-control systems.
