Vishay has introduced four automotive-grade optical devices combining an infrared emitter and PIN photodiode for communication between system nodes.

The VCND2040X02, VCND2040SLX02, VCND2045X02 and VCND2045SLX02 support data transmission up to 6 Mbit/s in a 4.4 × 2.25 × 1.9 mm surface-mount package. All four are AEC-Q102-qualified.

Applications include battery-cell monitoring and balancing, energy-storage systems and industrial automation.

The VCND2040 variants use a single-stack IR emitter with typical rise and fall times of 18 ns. The double-stack emitters in the VCND2045 variants reduce those times to 9 ns.

Separate lenses and an internal barrier limit optical crosstalk between transmitter and detector. The devices support short-range free-air communication, with secondary optics or optical fibre available to extend the link.

Top-view and side-view versions provide alternative mounting orientations. Wettable-flank lead frames support inspection of solder joints after assembly.

Samples and production quantities are available, with Vishay quoting eight-week lead times.
