Photonics coalition publishes manufacturing and interface documents

Five specifications and recommended-practice documents cover co-packaged optics, silicon photonics and multicore-fibre connections.

Five new documents from the Advanced Photonics Coalition address the manufacturing, testing and connection requirements behind co-packaged optics and silicon photonics.

Their scope extends across:

  • System architecture and recommended practices for co-packaged optics.
  • Silicon photonics test and manufacturing requirements.
  • Four-core multicore fibre, cables, connectors and fibre-array units.

The combination matters because a photonic assembly crosses several supplier boundaries. A common optical interface is only part of the problem if the associated test methods, manufacturing requirements or fibre termination arrangements differ.

The coalition, which has 60 member organisations, is establishing shared definitions to reduce that variation. The release includes both specifications and recommended practices, rather than five documents with identical status. Their publication establishes a basis for implementation and comparison; demonstrated interoperability will come from the products and testing that follow.

Further work includes optical circuit switching, with configuration and reliability among the subjects identified for development.
