DJI Dock 4 turns the drone battery into part of the ground system

DJI’s automatic battery exchange shifts charging out of the immediate pause between drone missions, alongside new inspection and obstacle sensors.

The battery can keep a drone on the ground long after the aircraft is ready to fly again. DJI's Dock 4 tackles that delay by exchanging the pack automatically, moving charging out of the immediate turnaround between flights.

DJI quotes a 25-second battery swap for the dock and its Matrice 5TD aircraft. The timing starts when the dock cover is fully closed and ends when the exchange is complete. It is not a measurement of the entire landing, handling and take-off sequence, and comes from a controlled test.

Separating the aircraft from the pack being charged changes how the system manages its energy. Rather than leaving one battery in the drone until it has recovered enough charge, the dock prepares a replacement for the next sortie. Flight data can transfer during the exchange, so the pause also becomes a communications window.

The ground equipment has its own thermal job. DJI specifies an operating range of −40°C to 50°C for the dock, with automatic battery preheating in cold conditions and air conditioning in heat. That dock rating should not be read as a temperature specification for every part of the aircraft or every flight operation.

A flying inspection instrument

The Matrice 5TD combines visible-light and infrared imaging with telephoto optics and laser ranging. Its obstacle-sensing system brings together three-directional millimetre-wave radar, rotating LiDAR and vision in six directions. Those are distinct sensing methods: radar responds to reflected radio signals, LiDAR measures with light, and cameras supply image information.

For electricity infrastructure inspection, the combination puts thermal observations and visible structures in the same mission. An infrared image can reveal an abnormal temperature pattern while the optical feed helps locate the relevant fitting or conductor. DJI also offers a fusion view that overlays structural information and heat distribution.

The company quotes a maximum flight duration of 59 minutes under its test conditions. That is an aircraft endurance figure, separate from the battery-exchange timing. Payload, weather and the flight profile affect the energy required for an actual mission.

Automation extends into the control software, but the workflow still distinguishes an alert from a dispatch decision. DJI's description of integration with third-party alerts requires an operator to confirm deployment. Dock 4 is offered through authorised DJI Enterprise dealers, paired with the Matrice 5TD.
